Students' Action Committee members blocked the New M.A Jinnah Road in front of the college and burnt tyres. They alleged that Muhammad Ali Sheikh, vice chancellor of Sindh Madrasatul Islam University, who is also acting Principal of DCET, is running the college as per his sweet wishes. They demanded to hold a new test for admission on self-finance seats of the college.
Acting Principal of DCET and VC of Sindh Madrasatul Islam University Dr Muhammad Ali Sheikh, when contacted, said the college has 100 self-finance seats and only 21 candidates had applied for these seats. He said for the remaining 79 vacant seats, those candidates who had already passed the admission test were preferred and asked to deposit pay order of Rs0.4mn each.
He said that a few people were agitating against this policy.
Meanwhile, a DCET press release said that a meeting of senior management of Dawood College of Engineering and Technology was held with Dr. Mohammad Ali Shaikh, Vice Chancellor of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) and Acting Principal of DCET, in the chair, on Wednesday.
The meeting was apprised that only 24 students had cleared the test against 100 seats reserved for the self-financing scheme, while there were more than 1200 students on waiting list on the basis of merit in various categories (non-self-finance categories).
It was decided that those students who have cleared the test and are on Waiting-list shall be given first priority to be allowed admission through self-financing, if they desire so.
It was also decided that as per admission policy of the DCET, after 7th January all the remaining seats lying vacant under the category of self- financing scheme shall be divided on equal basis among the rural and urban categories and admission shall be given to the candidates on the waiting list of both the rural and urban categories.
It was also decided that no new test for the self-financing will held.
