What is Duolingo?

Duolingo English test is an English proficiency test used to evaluate the ability to read, write, speak, and listen to the English language. It is accepted by 4000 universities in USA, Canada, New Zealand etc.

Duolingo English Test Pattern

Duolingo is a computer-based adaptive test. The more you progress through the test, the questions will become more difficult or less difficult depending on how you answer to previous questions. The Duolingo English Test takes about one hour to complete and has three segments:

1. Introduction and setup (5minutes)
2. Adaptive test (45 minutes) – includes questions such as reading comprehension, fill missing letters in words, etc
3. Video interview (10 minutes)

You get the results in 48 hours, and those results remain valid for two years.

Duolingo has strict testing rules for all test-takers to follow. These rules include the following:

• Keep ears and face uncovered and visible to the proctor all the time during the test.
• Keep mobile devices, notes, and textbooks away.
• Look at the device screen at all times during the test.
• Stay in the test window at all times.
• Avoid writing or reading notes.
• Speak only when instructed.
• No other people should be present around you.
• Ensure good lighting, a peaceful environment, a reliable internet connection, and a Windows or Mac operating system with a front-facing camera, microphone, and speakers
• Keep your official ID document like passport, driver’s license, or CNIC with you.

Duolingo Test Preparation

As an adaptive test, the question difficulty for the Duolingo English test will adjust as you work through the questions, and you likely won't be able to determine beforehand exactly which questions you'll receive on test day. Similarly, the length of the test will also vary. You should be ready for any level and length of questions. Free practice tests are given on the Duolingo website. Practice for the test from there and familiarize yourself with the test.

Should I take Duolingo English Test?

It is much cheaper than its alternatives, costing only 59 dollars while others cost around 200 dollars. However, it doesn’t help in the work visa process which IELTS does. If you want to take a test for a work visa, then here is a brief introduction to IELTS (International English Testing System), which is an English language proficiency test that is developed and run by the British Council in Partnership with IDP Education and Cambridge Assessment English.

IELTS is accepted across 140 countries. IELTS is required for work, study, and migration in English-speaking countries like the USA, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland.
