ENGINEERING AND PRACTICAL LIFE
Writer: Yousuf Almas
Overall, engineering is one of the very few professions where a great number of successful students manage to get affiliated with any firm / company right in the final year of their academic career. It is carried out in two different ways:
- Some well-reputed companies / firms conduct interviews in universities in the final year of the academic course / program and finalize their employees’ selection process.
- As a prerequisite of the course, the students have to work on a project in the final year of their studies. These projects are carried out under the supervision of the teaching faculty and in collaboration with the recognized / established companies. With a better performance in the projects, the students procure optimal chances for attractive job offers from these companies / firms.
Students, who still fail to establish a career with the help of any of the two ways stated above, successfully manage to find jobs for themselves after they complete their education. Quite a number of students opt for higher studies in universities in the country or abroad.
A very pertinent question in this regard is as to what types of tasks an engineer performs in the practical life. Depending upon different circumstances, engineers from all departments are required to perform miscellaneous jobs: whether it is the research work for production or preparation of a blueprint with the help of this research, getting organizational approval from the authorities after supplying the desired details to the blueprint and then ensuring provision of production requirements, materializing the project by supplying the required material at the location, and to offer the product in the market for sale after evaluating the entire production according to the established standards. All these form parts of the responsibilities of engineers. Different jobs and responsibilities, particular to every department of engineering, have been detailed in the Fourth Part of this guide (Introduction to Engineering Career).
Those who choose engineering as a career are not bound by any hard-and-fast routine. Not a single day in an engineer’s life is like a typical one. Their dress on a given day is the best with respect to the job they are to perform that day. From a casual T-shirt to a very formal suit, every outfit is proper only if it is according to the time and need. Engineering is not all about remaining engrossed in deskwork round the clock, engineers are rather required to be mobile bringing into line the office and the site.
NECESSARY SOFTWARE
At present, all departments, in conjunction with their sub departments, have been connected with computer and information technology. Use of particular software in every field has become a prerequisite. During the course of education, if students get trained in using such software with expertise, it can help them out in finding a place for them at the beginning of their practical life.
