Mian Mujtaba Shuja -ur-Rahman lauded the efforts of HEC for organizing colossal debating contest event among the university students of the Punjab. He admired the debate contestants on their effective participation and desired that students need to effectively participate in co-curricular activities to polish their skills.. While commenting over the topic of the debate ‘Education is the most effective weapon against the rising tide of extremism’, he termed it quite relevant to the need of day. He also applauded the decade long contribution of HEC in revolutionizing the Pakistani higher education sector and bringing it at par with international standards. He also distributed the cash prizes shields and certificates among the position holders.
The top three winners (both in English and Urdu debate contests) were awarded cash prizes and shields and also one top scoring team and one overall winner each in English and Urdu debate contests (six students) qualified for the final round of All Pakistan Inter University debate contest for award of Allama Iqbal shield .First, second, and third positions in English debating contest were secured by Mr. Ahmed Nadir from UET Taxila, Mr. Umar Khayam from PMAS-Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi and Ms. Safia Zia form University of Gujrat respectively. In the Urdu debating contest first, second, and third positions were won by Mr. Hamza Hameed Tarar from the University of Punjab Lahore, Mr. Salman Tariq from The University of the Punjab Lahore and Mr. Talah Wali UET Lahore respectively.
Earlier in welcome address, Mr. Nazeer Hussain Director HEC Regional Center Lahore highlighted the details and significance of the All Pakistan Inter University Debating Contest for award of Allama Iqbal shield.Lt. Gen ® Muhammad Akram Khan, Vice Chancellor UET Lahore and Prof. Dr. Muhammad Khaleeque Ur Rehman, Vice Chancellor GCU Lahore were the guest of honor during the English and Urdu debating contest sessions respectively.
Mr. Farman Ullah Anjum, Director General Academics HEC was also present on the occasion.
Higher Education Commission has been successfully organizing All Pakistan Inter-University Debate Contest for the last many years among students of public and private universities of Pakistan. The basic aim of this competition is to develop communication skills and better understanding among students studying at higher education institutions of Pakistan. Such types of competitions develop better understanding among the students on various social, economic and political issues being confronted by Pakistani society.
