After you're done with FSc pre engineering, it's time for you to look up for a university and your desired program. In the process of applying in universities, few things should be kept in mind. Students dont realize how important the Priority List of Programs in the admission form could be.
A student with 70% marks can score admission in his required program by filling up the priority list accurately, while a student with 78% marks can fail to get admission in the same program in the same universtiy. This is very interseting, let me describe in detail.
A student applying for electrical engineering as first priority usually take mechanical engineering as second and civil engineering as third option and computer engineering as their last priority which is a totally wrong approach. There is no similarity in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering except the word "Engineering".

Look for Branches and Specializations of your Desired Program
Every major university program has branches or specializations. Electrical engineering has more than 6 branches e.g. Power, Computer, Telecom, Electronics etc... Find out the branches or specializations of your selected program. Normally branches of the same program are offered as a separate discipline in the university. So if you are selecting Electrical Engineering as your first priority, then Telecom, Computer, Electronics etc... Should be your next priority.
Keep in mind that a student taking Electrical engineering as a discipline, shall have to select any specialization from Electronics, Computer, Telecom etc... after two years of studies and then will have to study his/her choose specialization for next two year. It is important to mention here that there will be no difference in the degree status or job opportunities for the both the students, the one who have take Electrical Engineering as a discipline and Computer engineering as a specialization and the student who has take Computer Engineering as a discipline.
2. Look for Closely Related Programs
Every program offered at a university has many related/sister program. Sometime the same program is offered by some other name. So it is important to know the related programs of your required discipline. E.g. molecular biology, biotechnology, genetic engineering etc are closely related programs. So if you are interested in Genetic Engineering, then you should also consider Biotechnology and Molecular Biology rather taking Biochemistry as a second option.
Before application, do gather all sort of information from the fields. After consultation, fill your priority list as per relevance. In this way you'll end up applying in all the fields relating to each other and you can get yourself into a good ranking university.
3.Always include Less Common Program Names in your Priority List
Always include the names of specializations or closely related programs of desired program in your priority list. Because majority of applicants don’t mention less common names in their priority list, and hence merit for those programs is remains lower. lso the merit of branches or specializations offered as a discipline is low as compared to main discipline. For example, the merit of Computer Engineering will always be lower than Electrical Engineering in any engineering university as most people see computer engineering as a different program than electrical engineering and do not apply for it.
How to get to know the related programs of a discipline
So if you are wondering by now that how can a student like you can get to know about all specializations, branches and related programs of a specific discipline, don’t worry. You can collect the information through following means:
- Talk to some University Teachers: A university teacher is the most experienced person and he can guide you really well in this regard better than anyone else. Ask them about the closely related programs of your desired field. You can consult 3-4 teachers during your first visit while collecting the admission form.
- Talk to the students of the specific departments: Already enrolled students of the university can also help you in this regard. So do talk to the students about your degree program.
- Seek Online Help at www.eduvision.edu.pk: seek help from professional counsellors for free by posting your question at our online Counseling portal here
- Visit Program Section: in eduvision program section, all programs of a specific field i.e. related programs are enlisted. For example, 64 engineering programs are enlisted on a single page here
