Being a student of the second year, you may be conscious about how to pass Mathematics, especially if you could not prepare it well throughout the year. Passing first year math is hard since most of its concepts require the knowledge and skills you might have learnt before. However, systematic planning can enable you to pass the math with some effort. This article discusses such planning.
The paper of Mathematics will consist of two sections: Objective (20 marks), and Subjective (80 marks). The objective part of the paper will contain 20 MCQs selected from all chapters, and you have no choice to leave any MCQs unprepared. The first part of the subjective section will consist of three questions (Q. 2, Q. 3 and Q 4) that will consist of short questions. You have to attempt all of these three questions; however, there is a choice within a question. The second part of the subjective section will contain five long questions (Q. 5 to Q. 9) and you have to attempt three questions out of five.
The paper of mathematics will be designed according to a pairing scheme – pairing questions from different chapters within a question. After considering the pairing scheme and difficulty level of different chapters, it is recommended to prepare the following chapters, either completely or partially, to pass the math paper.
- Prepare and revise units: 1, 2 and 4completely (all MCQs, short questions and long questions). It will enable you to attempt the questions of 46 marks.
- Prepare Unit: 3 (Exercise 3.1 to Exercise 3.4) completely (all MCQs, short questions and long questions). It will enable you to attempt the questions of 17 marks.
- Prepare Unit: 6 (Exercise 6.1 to Exercise 6.3), long questions and MCQs only. It will enable you to score 7 marks.
The above preparation will enable you to attempt the questions of at least 70 marks, and out of these marks, you can easily score the pass marks, 40.
In the area of MCQs, some questions will be about a given function. You have to find the range/ limit/ first derivative/integration/ maximum value of that function. Similarly, for a given equation, you may be asked to find the slope/ an equation of a parallel line/ the length of the transverse axis etc. If the equation is of a circle, you may be asked to find its radius/ diameter. In case of one/two given points, you have to find an equation of a horizontal line passing through a given point, and find the distance between two points drawn in a Cartesian plane. In the area of vectors, you have to work out, briefly, the product of given vectors.
In case of short questions, prepare definitions like: convex function, vertical line tests, altitude of an angle, and an angle between two lines etc. Prepare yourself to write the general forms/ formula of an equation etc. Prepare yourself to draw the graphs of a given function or inequality. Prepare how to: evaluate a limit, differentiate a function with respect to a given function, and prove various identities/ formulas. Similarly, you have to prepare to find: the distance/ equation/ area with respect to given points and lines, the radius/ diameter of a circle in different cases, and the equation of a target with given information.
Math is nothing except practice. As a practice, appear in any model paper conducted by either your school or any academy, and participate in the discussion that is, often, made at the end of these papers. Also learn how to attempt an MCQ if you don't exactly know which option of the MCQ is the correct one. Time management, in a paper, is obviously crucial. Plan your time allocation for each question well before the paper. And, prayers definitely work, so don’t forget to pray at the end. Wish you the best of luck.
