Being a first-year student, in Punjab board, you will be conscious about how to score the highest marks in English. Perhaps, you have been preparing according to the new paper pattern for the last whole year. Then, what else can one do? Here are a few tips, in coming lines, for you to score the best in the upcoming Punjab Boards exam.
The paper of first year English will consist of two parts: Objective and Subjective. The objective part will have 20 MCQs and has to be solved in 30 minutes. It will contain questions from all areas of the syllabus – short stories, one act plays, poems and grammar. The subjective part has two sections: first and second. The first section will be from short stories, plays and poems (Book-I and Book-III) while the second one will be, mostly, grammar and designed from Grammar and Composition Book.
In the paper, the MCQs will contain: synonyms (10 marks), textbooks’ lines (5 marks) and the correct use of the verb (5 marks). In case of synonyms, and textbooks’ lines, prepare lessons: 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14 from Book-I, and plays: 1, 2, 3, and all poems from Book-III. Note it down that only two MCQs will be selected from poems. Also prepare the correct use of the verb in past, present, and future tenses, and the sentences like: conditional and universal truth.
The first section, of the subjective part, will have three questions (Q 2, Q 3 and Q 4) and you have to attempt all these questions. The questions will contain short questions, and there is a choice within a question. The detail of each question, and how they can be prepared is as under:
- The Q. 2 will contain nine short questions from the short stories, and you have to answer the six questions. Prepare the short questions of short stories: lessons 1 to 12 thoroughly.
- The Q. 3 will contain eight short questions from one act plays, and you have to answer the five questions. Prepare Play 2 and Play 3 very well.
- The Q. 4 will contain six short questions from poems, and you have to answer the four questions. It is recommended to leave the poems 6 to 10 on choice and prepare the rest of the poems very well.
The section-II of the subjective part will contain four questions (Q 5, Q 6, Q 7 and Q 8). You have to attempt all these questions; however, there is a choice within each question. The detail of the questions is as under:
- The Q. 5 will contain two parts: a letter and an application, and there is a choice between these. It is recommended to prefer the application over the letter and prepare all applications given in your grammar book.
- The Q. 6 will contain two stories and you have to write one .Prepare all of the stories given in your grammar book.
- The Q. 7 will have three parts: stanza of a poem, punctuation and pairs of words. It is advised to prepare the stanza of well-known poems especially the poems 6 to10. Prepare punctuation and pairs of words from your grammar book as well.
- The Q. 8 is about translating a paragraph, from short stories, into Urdu. In the case of a foreign student or an English medium student, you have to write an essay on a given topic. The topics may be from English Grammar and Composition by Punjab Textbook Board. Prepare this section accordingly.
At the end, it is advised to participate in, at least, two model papers, at school or academy, and, after that, attend the discussion conducted on ‘how to attempt the paper’. In the paper, write clearly and precisely. Time management, in any paper, is obviously crucial, and the same is the case in the paper of computer science. Plan your time allocation for each question well before the paper. And, prayers definitely work, so don’t forget to pray at the end. Wish you the best of luck.
