More than 140K students appeared in MDCAT entry test 2018 (66K in Punjab, 38 K in KPK, 25K in Sindh), and almost 14,000 seats are available all over the country so less than 10% got admission in MBBS program last year. Those who cannot get admission in MBBS, choose BDS, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy (only a few) and Biotechnology. It has also been noted that many of these students take CA, BBA, or other options after failing to get admission in MBBS degree program. That is almost 180 degree turn, as the student had been studying Biology and chemistry for four year, and now all of sudden have opted a degree program that require a strong foundation in mathematics and economics.
Today we are sharing a detailed list of options and degree programs that a Pre-medical student can take to continue his/her studies in medical field, or the fields related to the subjects he/she had studied.
80+ Options in Medical & Allied Health Sciences
Not only MBBS, BDS, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy, but over 80 Bachelor degree programs are available in the field of Medical & Allied Health Sciences, and most of these are specializations that an MBBS degree holder goes for after completing MBBS and House Job. For example, to be a specialized Anesthesiologist, one needs to complete 5 years MBBS, One Year House Job, and then 4-5 years FCPS/MCPS/MS in Anaesthesiology, so it takes about 12 years to become a specialized Anaesthesiologist. But with the advent in medical field, and ever increasing demand of professionals, medical colleges have introduced a 4 years BS program in the same field that students can seek admission to after FSc. So to become an Anaesthesiologist, you can take two routes, the one with MBBS and 12 years, or the one which takes only 4 years after FSc. Similar is the case with many other specializations like Vision Sciences/Optometry, Cardiology, and Intensive Care etc…
Off course, the one with MBBS degree and FCPS specialized degree will be ranked higher, and the one with BS degree cannot take the position of the other, but the point is that not getting admission in MBBS does not mean that you cannot enter into medical field. There are over 80 programs/specializations available for you in medical sciences and these are offered by Top Medical Colleges Like King Edward, Allama Iqbal Medical University, Rawalpindi Medical University etc..
