Personality

Your personality is made up of traits and behaviors that shape up your character and outlook toward life. So how can you understand your own personality?

It is quite simple. You just need thorough introspection as well as observation. You should understand your likes, dislikes, reactions to different kind of settings. Some important questions that you may ask yourself include,

1. Am I an introvert or an extrovert?

2. Do I like to do work with my hands, or am I good at coming up with ideas?

3. Do I have good humor or am I relatively serious person?

4. What kind of subjects do I actually like to study, and lose track of time while I do them?

5. What hobbies bring me the most satisfaction?

6. Do I like to stay in one place or do I love to adventure different places and tasks?

These are just a few examples. You can ask yourself numerous other questions also. The point in understanding your personality is to observe your own behavior in different situations and identify the things that bring you joy.

Abilities

Your abilities are things that you are very talented, skilled, or proficient at.

Be careful, that your abilities are not limited to your performance at mathematics or science. Different people are born with their own unique abilities. These abilities could be intellectual, artistic, sports related and so on. To know your abilities, you should analyze the things you can easily understand, and can do better than many other people.

Let’s see some indications that can help you to pin point your abilities more easily.

1. Are you good at understanding numbers, calculations, or numerical data?

2. Are you good at drawing, painting, sketching etc?

3. Can you think of original ideas and express them eloquently?

4. Are you a good speaker?

5. Do you find joy in building and fixing things?

6. Do you think you can solve problems more easily?

7. Are you really good at technology?

8. Do you like managing and organizing things?

9. Do you like to understand politics and the social world around you?

Your abilities can also be beyond the questions listed here. You can look into so many more aspects and see what you are good at. From cooking and baking, to performing arts, and highly technical scientific pursuits, you can be capable of anything more than others.

Once you know such abilities, much about career selection becomes easy, because this helps you develop a clear idea of what you may want to do with your life.

Values

What are your values?

Your values are some of the important rules and guidelines by which you wish to live. For example, good family life, honesty etc.

Your success at any job depends greatly on your values as well. You will not excel at a career where you need to travel a lot but you prefer stability in your work and family life. You may earn well through this, but you will not be satisfied on the inside.

Some values that you may consider include,

1. Honesty

2. Service to mankind

3. Money

4. Fame

5. Adventure

6. Service of the nation

7. Family/work as the first priority

8. Religious values

Similar to these, you may have other values. Your professional life will greatly depend upon what you hold dear to yourself. So, make sure you have a good idea of how you wish to spend your life.

Education

The fourth and most important component is your education. Once you carefully monitor the above three aspects you will have to decide upon an education that fits with your personality, abilities, values, and personal circumstances. This decision will lead you to the career you wish to build for yourself.

The most crucial decision regarding education is what you make at the end of your high school. If you are a FSc or A levels student, you must make a choice regarding your university or other kind of professional education. Along with the above 3 components you should decide the education you would be taking based upon your financial situation, the time you can afford to study until you start earning, and other personal circumstances.

Once you identify your personality traits, abilities, values, and education, the next step is to aim for a career that is perfect for you. Then find a list of careers that match with these 6 to 9 aspects of your personality, and also compliment your education.
