The biology paper will have three parts: the MCQs (12 marks), the short questions (30 marks), and the long questions (18 marks). In the paper, 75% of all questions (45 marks) will be of knowledge level. These questions will be asked with the keywords: define, what is meant by, write symptoms of, define structure of, write functions of, what are the levels of, describe harmful effects of, describe causes of, write two names/ kinds/ characteristics of, and give one example of. The rest of the 25 % questions, (15 marks), will be analytical and asked with the keywords like: how is, how does, why is/are, how is it classified, analyze, compare, differentiate, and contrast. What you have to prepare is how to answer a question of knowledge level, like 'define osmosis', and how to answer a question of analytical levels, like 'differentiate interspecific interactions and intraspecific interactions’. The following examples of questions’ keywords will describe, further, about ‘how to answer?’
· In case of writing a definition, don’t exceed your answer to two lines and also provide an example. In contrast, while differentiating two terms, you may draw two columns and write the characteristics of one term in one column and the characteristics of the ther term in the opposite column.
· In case of comparing two terms/quantities, you have to write the differences, and, as well as, the commonalities between given terms/quantities. In contrast, in case of differentiating two terms/quantities, you have to write the differences only.
The first part of the paper (MCQs) has to be attempted in 15 minutes; therefore, it is advised to be careful about managing the given time. To score all 12 marks in this part, it is always advisable to cover all the chapters and keep the MCQs’ marks scheme in mind that is: one MCQ will be from each of the units 10, 11, 12, 13, 17and 18, and two MCQs from each of units 14, 15, and 16. While attempting the first part of the paper, do not leave any MCQ unanswered. Learn more techniques to answer the MCQs from the internet.
In the second part of the paper, there are three questions (Q 2, Q 3 and Q 4) each of which contain eight short questions. You have to attempt all three questions; however, in a question, there is a choice – answer five short questions out of eight. In the last part of the paper, there are three long questions (Q 5, Q 6 and Q 7) and you have to attempt two. We are not discussing, here, how short questions are arranged, nor are we discussing the pairing scheme of units in long questions. Rather, we are advising some preparation tips in the coming paragraph under the guidelines provided by the pairing scheme.
Prepare units 12, 14, 17, and 18 completely (MCQs, short questions and long questions). It will enable you to attempt two long questions; nine short questions, and five MCQs. Now, prepare MCQs and short questions for units 10, 15, and 16. This preparation will enable you to answer the remaining six short questions and five MCQs. If you did not appear in any model paper conducted by either your school or any academy; then, it is advisable to appear in at least two of these. It is also recommended to participate in the discussion that is often made at the end of these papers. It will enable you to answer a given question as per requirement of the board. In the paper of biology, describing a function or process with the help of a diagram also plays an important role. Therefore, it is advised to practice all expected diagrams of the textbook and draw them in ideal time. Time management, in a paper, is obviously crucial. Plan your time allocation for each question well before the paper. And, prayers definitely work, so don’t forget to pray at the end. Wish you the best of luck.
