ISLAMABAD - National Centre for Physics (NCP) in collaboration with Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy is organizing the Fifth International Scientific Spring (ISS) from March 11-15, at NCP campus. Prof J. Niemela of ICTP and Dr. Hamid Saleem are the directors of the activity and both are hopeful that collaboration between the two centres will strengthen in the years to come. The activity will focus some important areas of basic and applied physics. Oral talks, video lectures and posters on specific research topics will be presented by the renowned foreign and local scientists/researchers. The event will facilitate productive discussions among experts and local researchers. The interaction of younger researchers/students with foreign experts will be very beneficial for carrying out research projects for industrial & socio economic development in Pakistan. Such discussions will lead to new ideas and will prove very fruitful for the local scientists engaged in research and development. This activity has brought with it a sense of scientific “festivity” in Pakistan; indeed, it is our hope that a “Spring” of new ideas and thoughts will emerge in this part of the world, bringing with it prosperity and social justice along with stability. In fact, it is the second time that International Scientific Spring is being jointly organized by NCP and ICTP. However, the main purpose of holding the ISS is to inspire young students & researchers to do quality research with enthusiasm and present the outcome of their scholarly work among a galaxy of experts in the relevant disciplines for questioning and criticism. The ISS event provides a unique platform and excellent opportunity to discuss results of their theoretical and experimental research in the presence of internationally renowned scientists and experts” Dr. Hamid Saleem, Director General NCP said.Foreign scientists from different universities of Algeria, China, Egypt, Italy,Iraq, Japan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, USA and UAE will participate and present their research papers. The activity will focus on the core areas of physics and its related fields like Accelerator Physics, Particle Physics, Nanosciences and Plasma Physics. It is worth mentioning that twoProfessor Harold W. Kroto and Dr. Robert Kurl (Nobel Laureates) will deliver video lectures in this activity followed by question-answer sessions.Dr. Hamid Saleem said that presently, NCP is focusing on two main themes; one is the development of a strong theoretical physics department at NCP and the other is to establish a few very active research laboratories such as Laser Plasma Physics, Material Sciences Department and Environmental Research Laboratories for indigenous research to be applied to solve the problems being faced by the country and play a role in supporting industrial development and environment.
