This Inter-University Debate Contest was the 2nd Round of 15th All Pakistan Inter-University Debate Contest and only those students participated in this contest who got 1st and 2nd positions in the interdepartmental debate contests of their respective universities. After the selection of students at 1st Round, each university sent two students to participate in the 2nd round of this debate contest.
In this debate contest a total of 60 participants from fifteen different universities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad including Islamic International University Islamabad, Quaid-e-Azam University, Arid Agricultural University Rawalpindi, COMSATS Islamabad, Fatima Jinnah Women University and many other universities, participated for the categories of English and Urdu debates.
The rules of the contest required the speech must be completely memorized, no notes allowed, must be between two to three minutes in length, provocative and abusive language was not allowed and judges can disqualify any of the candidate. Mirza Atta- ur-Rauf from English Graduate Studies Department of NUML secured the first position and Rs 7500/- cash prize while Ahmed Nawaz of the Mass Communication Department of NUML secured the 2nd position and Rs 5000/- cash prize in the category of English Debate contest. These two positions grabbed by the NUML students led NUML to overall winner of the competition and it has awarded the title of "Champion University" of the region in debate contest.
Moreover, these two position holders of the 2nd round will represent Islamabad region at National level debate contest in third and final round of 15th All Pakistan Inter University Debate Contest for Award of Allama Iqbal Shield 2012 which will be held at Higher Education Commission, Islamabad. The participants and winners of debate contest along with Director Students Affairs Muhammad Taj and Assistant Prof Habib-ur-Rehman met Rector NUML Maj Gen (R) Masood Hasan and presented him the winning shield.
Rector NUML felicitated the students for their brilliant performance in the debate contest and told them that "it is a great source of pride for him to know that students are performing remarkably in each filed of their academic life.
Participation in such healthy co-curricular activities is of a great benefit as they provided them ample opportunities to excel in their academic as well social life alike.
One knows the real depth of a hurdle when one comes across it." Moreover, Rector announced a cash prize of Rs 5000/- for each participant and winner of the debate contest.
