According to the official notification issued by PM Secretariat, the upgradation is in fulfilment of the announcement made by the prime minister on the occasion of Salam Teachers Day on November 8, 2010.
The newly up-graded posts in BS-17 have been re-designated as Secondary School Teachers (SST). Teachers have thanked the prime minister for the provision of better pay and service conditions to the teachers.
However, it is the only grade 16 teachers, whose upgradation has been approved by PM, while the case of rest of upgradations is still lying with finance division for approval.
Earlier, it was the rule that only those who pass Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) exams are eligible for Grade 17 and majority of teachers retire in grade 16 for not fulfilling the FPSC criteria.
It is pertinent to mention here that the approval of the upgradation of the grade 16 teachers have got nothing to do with the teachers protests held on Wednesday. The demands of Federal Government College Teacher Association (FGCTA) is altogether different from what has been approved by the PM. The recently approved package is for the schoolteachers.
