Pakistan Medical Commission has lowered the pass percentage for admissions to BDS programs in all dental colleges in the country. Now students will be required to pass MDCAT with 55% marks to be eligible to apply for admissions to BDS programs in all dental colleges in the country.
MDCAT pass percentage is lowered as less number of applicants were admitted to BDS in the last academic session. Hundreds of seats remained vacant as students did not apply for BDS program even in major dental colleges in the country. Dental Colleges recorded their protest and kept pushing PMC to revise its policies. Now the PMC has announced a new policy for admission to BDS programs. According to the policy, BDS admissions will start after MBBS admission. Previously MBBS and BDS admissions were opened simultaneously.
PMC has announced the same on its website and its official social media accounts. The social media posts read, “Based on two recent conferences held with dental colleges of Pakistan, the colleges have submitted their recommendations related to lowering MDCAT pass percentage for admission in dental program to the National Academic Board for consideration. The Board has directed the National Medical Authority to collect data of average MDCAT scores from the provinces as well as from Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU). The Board considered lowering the MDCAT pass marks for BDS program to 60% subject to the analysis asked from the provinces. The Council in its 11th meeting held on 14th May 2022 considered the matter and has suggested to the Board to consider fixing the MDCAT pass percentage for BDS program at 55%”.
