Professor Dr.Hafiz Muhammad Inamullah, Director Distance Education Programme UoP told APP that three learning centres in Peshawar and one in each district of Khyber Pakthunkhwa is being setup for students of Distance Education Programme to provide quality education to them at their doorsteps.
He said Distance Education has started various programmes including Master and Bachelor in Education, Master in Economics, International Relations, Political Science and English to impart quality education to students who could not get admission in universities or postgraduate colleges due to some reasons.
Dr. Inamullah said centres would be located at such places of each district where students from all corners, areas could easily reach.
He said the demand for education has increased drastically throughout the world and the formal system of education cannot cope with the demand of education for all due to increase in population and technological advancement. He said an effort to extend educational opportunities to all eligible students especially to adults, distance education appears to provide the best answer.
"The idea of Distance Education Programme was floated by High Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad in 2007 and six highly reputable universities including university of Peshawar was selected for this goal oriented programme," he told APP.
He said the interest shown by the students in this program was highly encouraging that could be judged from the fact that over 700 students applied for M.Ed and more than 500 in B.Ed programme.
"We have introduced a Tutorial System for this system to facilitate and educate the admitted students in their respective districts," he said, adding about 2000 applications for tutorship has been received and tutors would be selected strictly on merit keeping in view their academic record, experience and nature of students availability.
Dr. Inam said UoP has brought a revolution in the field of education and has provided an opportunity to poor, on job and people of all walks of life irrespective of age, colour and gender to get education on their doorsteps.
He said tutors would make sure the holding of meetings/sessions with the students in study centres according to prescribe schedule and classes will start in March for which all arrangements is being completed.
The students have been directed that if they want to change/update their addresses and other details please contact or call the distance education office before 19th Februrary 2013 during office hours in their own interest.
Dr.Inam said that all students would be informed about their tutors/resource persons, assignments and other related information through Pakistan Post.
The students enrolled under this programme would be called Distance Education Students of UoP and the examination would be held under annual system likely to be held in August this year, he added.
He said Friday (Feb 15, 2013) was the last date for submission of admission fee for the aforesaid programs and students applied for admission should submit their admission fee at United Bank Limited as no extension would be given for submission of admission fee after expiry of the due date.
He said Allama Iqbal Open University was the pioneer in Distance Education as it was first in Asia and second in world started this programme in 1974 for which thousands of students were educated.
Dr. Inamaullah expressed the hope that this system would prove instrumental in preparations of students of far flung areas for future challenges and promotion of literacy rate in the country.
