WHAT IF YOU ARE CONFUSED ABOUT YOUR CAREER PATH?
(4 minutes read)
Have you ever, sitting idly, had the thought that how easy would it be if you knew what exactly you are meant to do or what job is the right one for you? Do you earn for older times when you were told what to do or options were limited? A farmer’s son would be a farmer, a blacksmith’s a blacksmith and a medicine man’s will learn the art of medicine. Life must have been so simple, with no confusion or stress of figuring out a career.
Right?
But wait. What if you didn’t want to be a blacksmith? Tough luck, I guess. You’re options are limited and you are told to just get on with it. So thinking about it, no, this is not what you want, what you want is to stop this feeling of confusion about your career. You want some sort of certainty that you are doing what is meant for you and you will be successful in it.
If you are having a difficult time choosing a career in college, and you tell people that you don’t know what you want to do for a living, people around you like your family and friends would shower you with advice of all nature. Some might pose questions such as “what would you want to do if you don’t have to think about money?” or “Do something that will get you good money with little work.” Some might even propose certain careers based on their experience and knowledge. Although these are advices that you can consider, do not base your choice on them. Carefully research and get expert advice on your choices and make a calculated decision.
If you are confused about your career path, consider the following tips to help you find it
- Reflect on your hobbies and skills
Before you think about anything, consider what your skills and hobbies are and write them down. Reflect on why you enjoy these hobbies? For example if you like running, you may be oriented towards challenging yourself or achieving set goals. So maybe a career that fulfils these qualities would interest you. Also take note of the tasks or activities that you hate to do. This will help you stay clear of those choices that involve these activities.
- Take an online aptitude test
In addition to self reflection, consider taking some quizzes and test that could guide you towards your field of interest or pinpoint your skills and aptitude. You can take one available on our website https://www.eduvision.edu.pk/members/home.php
- Speak to a career counsellor or an expert
Following this tip could help play a major role in helping you in the right direction. A discussion with a career counsellor may help you clear your mind and can open you up to careers you had no idea existed. A career counsellor may suggest you take a test and it is best to take a test under the guidance of an expert who can discuss the result with you.
- Interview or shadow someone for a day
If you have a few options in mind and you cannot decide which one you like better or suits you, interviewing someone in person or on call who is already working in those fields. Most people are happy to discuss ideas with someone who is eager to listen. In addition, you may ask permission to shadow them for a day or so, where you can observe in person what their day is like
- Look through job descriptions of jobs that interest you
Another option is to go through the job description of jobs that appeal to you on the first look. Doing so will give you an idea of their requirements and if your skills and interest match those that are required.
- Get a broad education
If you are still not sure, a safer option would be choosing a broader degree or program for your bachelors. This will leave you with greater options to avail further from than if you choose a more specific program. For example you like biology or chemistry but don’t know which subfield you want to focus on, get a degree in biology or chemistry and you could then major in a specific field later on.
