Teaching is considered as one of the most prestigious and challenging careers that an individual can pursue. You have to work long hours in a stressful and disciplined environment. Teachers play a vital role in shaping the lives of students, be it leading elementary and preschool children or guiding university students towards new grounds and researches.

Teacher is a professional who moulds the future of the country into thinkers, leaders and intellectuals and when done right and dutifully, this profession is rewarding and provides you a lot respect from society. Pakistan is considered as a developing country and the economy of our country could be developed in a faster pace by improving the standards of education

Job Market For A Teacher

Teachers are employed in government and private schools, colleges and institutes. You may also work full time, part time, online or from home. Normally teachers work a portion of a year and then enjoy an extended break over the summers and around holidays.

Requirements To Become A Teacher

The basic requirement is to earn a bachelors degree from an accredited college to begin your journey as a teacher, but which degree you should pursue depends the level and subject you are interested or plan to teach.

There is a wide range of options that you can choose from. Knowing which level you want to teach on and how much education you would like to get can help

Degrees and certifications in Pakistan for teachers:

In Pakistan the basic degrees that are known for teachers are Associate Degree in Education, Bachelors of Education (B. Ed) and Masters of Education (M. Ed). The duration and eligibility for these programs vary upon your prior qualifications:

  • After intermediate level you could go for ADE( 2 years) which leads to B. Ed.
  • B. Ed is a 4 year program in general after intermediate but if you go for it after ADE or bachelors degree, you continue it from the 5th semester onward.
  • M. Ed degree is done after bachelors and duration varies depending on the degree you have acquired.

In addition, various post graduate diplomas and certificates are also offered based on the specific nature of different fields such as special education and Montessori.

You can also apply while having degrees of BSc/BA/BS in some school and colleges as per the institute’s job criteria.

If you are interested in teaching at universities and higher education institutes, the minimum qualification is a MS/Mphil degree. PhD degree is required for senior positions. Generally, the eligibility criteria for universities are determined by higher education commission.

General eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria for government schools are decided by ministry of education and education departments for all provinces. Various posts of Teachers including Elementary School Educators (ESE), Senior Elementary School Educators (SESE) and Secondary School Educators (SSE) are announced by provincial governments once or twice a year.

  • The minimum qualification for ESE is 14 years of education or B.A/BSc in the relevant field with at least 2nd division.
  • For SESE and SSE, the minimum criteria is BS(Hons)/ MA/ MSc or 16 years of education in the relevant field with at least 2nd division
  • Addition marks are given with increased education such as MS/MPhil and educational certifications.

For private schools, larger organizations may announce vacancies and criteria may be also determined by the school principal and head master depending on the rank of school or class that the teacher needs to be appointed for. For smaller organisations, you may have to approach them yourself with your CV and documents and give demo classes to be appointed on the spot.

So stability across all areas in life, meaning having the stature, ethics and behaviour of a teacher in school as well as outside of it, is what makes a teacher a mentor and an idol in the eyes of students.
