Q. How many fields of engineering are available in Pakistan?
Over 60 engineering programs are offered at the Undergraduate level in Pakistan. All of these programs are 4-years degree programs. Universities offer BSc Engineering, BS, or Bachelor of Engineering degrees. The status of all of these degrees is the same as long as these are recognized by Pakistan Engineering Council.
This is pertinent to mention here that a Degree accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council under Level-II is recognized by the Washington Accord, which means the degree is recognized all over the world in the countries that are the signatory of the Washington Accord. Q. Which subjects are required for admission in Engineering in Pakistan?
In order to get admitted to any of the Engineering institutions of Pakistan, one must have passed HSSC Pre-Engineering or its equivalent exam (A’level, 12th grade) with Physics, Chemistry (computer science is also accepted instead of chemistry for some fields like computer engineering), Mathematics and English as major subjects irrespective of the education system.
The second thing that needs to be kept into consideration is Urdu, Islamic Studies, and Pakistan Studies. It is not necessary to take the exam of these subjects if the student has taken his/her exams outside Pakistan physically but if he/she has appeared in the exams from Pakistan then it is necessary to take the exam of these subjects also whether the student is studying in the Pakistani education system or any other system (A’ level etc).
Q. Is there any minimum requirement for admission in Engineering?
Yes, the minimum requirement for admission in engineering, as prescribed by PEC, is 60% in HSSC pre-engineering or its equivalent qualification. Students who have completed their education other than that of the Pakistani system must obtain an equivalence certificate from Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC). Students must score a minimum of 60% marks in the IBCC equivalence certificate to be eligible to apply for admission to engineering programs in Pakistan.
Q. Does the student have to appear in the entry test?
Every student seeking admission to any engineering institution in Pakistan will have to appear in the entry test except foreign nationals and Pakistanis having dual nationality. One must prepare for the entry test with full concentration. Students must appear in Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) conducted by different universities. For admission to most of the Government Universities in Punjab, ECAT by UET Lahore is required. For admission to engineering universities in KP, ECAT by ETEA is required. Some universities like NUST, GIKI, PIEAS, NED UET Karachi, and Mehran UET Jamshoro conduct their own entrance test. COMSATS accepts NTS test scores.
Q. Is there any authority to regulate engineering education in Pakistan?
Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) is the main regulatory authority for Engineering Education. Basic criteria for admission, teacher’s minimum qualification, minimum lab material, and pre-requisites are defined by PEC. A student must ensure that the degree program of the university he/she is applying to is accredited by Pakistan Engineering Council. If the degree program of a particular university is not accredited by PEC, then the degrees of students enrolled in that program will not be recognized by PEC, and he/she will not be able to get a job in any engineering firm in the country. Also, the degree will not be accepted out of the country.
Q. When does the admission process start in Engineering Institutions?
